Statnett and Graphwise (the result of the merger of Ontotext and Semantic Web Company) kicked off the project “Democratizing the Use of Power System Models”, also called “Talk2PowerSystem” on February 21. This is an ambitious 14-month project with the main goal of enabling the use of large language models (LLMs) for querying complex grid models using natural language, interacting with time-series databases and other systems at Statnett. It might also include learning and generating code for automated analytics using popular power system libraries. In addition to SPARQL querying, we also plan to target GraphQL querying, using Semantic Objects (to be incorporated in GraphDB 11).

A secondary goal includes the semantic integration of product catalog data of Building Information Model (BIM) and IEC Common Information Model (CIM). It may  even look at alignment between detail substation design and high-voltage electrical assets (switchgear, transformers, and more) with their CIM representation. Other subsidiary goals include investigation of the semantic interoperability part of Common European Data Spaces and dissemination of our research.

The project will be developed as open source at https://github.com/statnett/Talk2PowerSystem and will use agile software management techniques. We will publish extensive Question-Query-Answer datasets for the electrical domain, all our prompting and LLM interfacing code, definition of GraphDB tools to be used by the LLM, and perhaps fine-tuned models (LLMs). We will be looking actively for collaboration with electrical enterprises through Statnett’s extensive network, ENTSO-E, and Graphwise clients.

Statnett SF is the system operator of the Norwegian power system and is owned by the Norwegian state and is responsible for developing, operating and maintaining the transmission grid and for securing the balance between demand and supply of electricity. Statnett is a key contributor to the IEC and ENTSO-E standards for semantic representation of electrical data: the electrical CIM and its extension CGMES respectively.

Graphwise is the leading vendor of semantic technologies, whose semantic database GraphDB is used in a number of electrical enterprises, including Statnett, Svenska Kraftnat, EDF, and others.
