Success Story

Achieving 360 Asset Visibility and Predictive Maintenance for a Resilient Grid

A transmission systems operator used Graphwise’s GraphDB to achieve 360° asset visibility and predictive maintenance, modernizing asset management for a more resilient grid infrastructure and optimized operational costs.

The Client

Transmission systems operator (TSO) managing complex power distribution infrastructure with diverse equipment spanning various ages and conditions

The Challenge

The TSO needed to optimize maintenance practices and enhance grid monitoring capabilities to offer more efficient, reliable, and sustainable energy services while managing aging, mixed-condition infrastructure

The Solution

Using Graphwise’s GraphDB, the TSO created an Electric Grid Assets knowledge graph that integrates disparate data sources and establishes shared vocabularies for unified asset management

Technical capabilities

  • 360° asset visibility through integration of sensors, IoT devices, and monitoring systems data
  • Standards-based integration using CIM, IFC, ISO 15926-14, ESCO, and O*NET ontologies, ensuring interoperability and avoiding vendor lock-in

Business outcomes

  • Lower downtime through state-of-the-art predictive maintenance strategies
  • Optimized maintenance costs with better planning and resource allocation

The Challenge

The TSO faced significant challenges with keeping accurate, up-to-date asset inventory as aging infrastructure required frequent maintenance and inventory changes. The mixed equipment spanning various ages and conditions made management even more difficult.

Inaccurate asset information led to increased downtime, higher failure rates, and costly upgrades. Meanwhile, vast amounts of data from sensors, IoT devices, and monitoring systems remained siloed, preventing the TSO from gaining asset visibility or deriving meaningful insights for decision-making.

The Solution

The modernization journey began by identifying relevant systems and deciding how to access information — generating RDF triples from data sources versus virtualization. Graphwise worked closely with the TSO’s data architects to model and select appropriate ontologies.

The Electric Grid Assets knowledge graph powered by Graphwise’s GraphDB served as a unifying layer, seamlessly integrating data from disparate sources. By establishing shared vocabularies and ontologies, it ensured uniform interpretation and utilization of data across the organization.

Graphwise’s GraphDB enriched existing data with grid relationships and uncovered previously hidden interdependencies. This provided better understanding of IoT devices and monitoring systems with a dynamic and accurate snapshot of grid status. Built on open W3C standards (RDF, OWL, and SPARQL), the solution ensured interoperability and avoided vendor lock-in.

The Impact

The knowledge graph-based solution delivered comprehensive improvements across TSO operations:

  • Enhanced decision-making processes with complete 360° view of assets under management
  • Reduced downtime through implementation of state-of-the-art predictive maintenance capabilities
  • Optimized maintenance costs with better resource planning and activity coordination
  • Infrastructure improvement planning by identifying weak points based on analysis of past and current operations
  • Accelerated analytics delivery by connecting disparate datasets into a cohesive, queryable knowledge base
  • Real-time connectivity and adaptability to the ever-evolving electricity grid landscape

The scalable architecture accommodated the volume and complexity of the TSO’s data, providing the foundation for effective asset management practices and modernized network grid capabilities. This resulted in more resilient, efficient, and future-ready electrical grid infrastructure.
